Haringey Libraries budget to be slashed by 30%
■ Labour run Haringey Council have rejected calls by opposition Councillors to slash the library budget by 30% over two years. This will mean much shorter opening hours across Haringey, including Highgate library.
■ Don Williams (our candidate to be your next MP) was Opposition Spokesman for Finance on Camden Council, when he proposed a budget to stop Labour from cutting libraries. Don, along with all the people he met at the Highgate Library Action Group meeting recenty, is shocked that Haringey Labour wants such deep cuts in library budgets.
■ This Labour cut will axe £700 000 from the borough-wide library service. They are rumored to be ending the supply of newspapers for reading in the local libraries. Sadly no Labour Councillors voted against these swinging cuts.
■ While library services are assaulted the council's PR magazine, 'Haringey People' remains fully funded, despite being barely read.
■ Don also fully supports opposition councilors calls to axe one of the highly paid council directors posts. Haringey has far more than most London Boroughs. Despite all these extra staff, it is regularly rated as one of London's Boroughs worst by its residents.
■ There are genuine fears that further cuts are planned. If you want to share your views let us know by signing our petition against further cuts to library services, here in Highgate and in less affluent parts of Haringey. Its very easy, just type into a search engine haringey.team/NoLibraryCuts
