After our recent tweet on freedom of the press in Bangladesh, we received lots of positive feedback from our local Bangladeshi community, requesting us to continue to be their voice and that of their families still in Bangladesh.
Sadly, Bangladesh's autocratic government, led by Tulip Siddiqs aunt Sheikh Hasina has closed 190 more independent media outlets, papers, blogs, and news websites in preparation for next year's general election. We urge Tulip Siddiq, in her capacity as MP and, as she says about herself, human rights fighter, to raise these concerns.
As Britain, our goal must be to fight autocratic regimes and dictatorships worldwide. Britain fights for silenced voices, a beacon of freedom. Tulip has access to her aunt. She should use it.
