BLOW TO ABACUS AND HAVERSTOCK SCHOOLS
It is very sad news Haverstock School has decided not to allow Abacus Belsize Primary School to take up under-utilised space on Haverstock’s site on Haverstock Hill.
Abacus is an extremely popular local state school and is the best-rated school in Camden. But children have to be bussed to their temporary home in Kings Cross.
We are dedicated to practical work towards an achievable outcome and proposed the Haverstock two years ago.
Steve Adams and then leader of Camden Conservatives Oliver Cooper wrote to the Department of Education making the case for co-location at Haverstock School, and there were high hopes it would help Abacus and save Haverstock.
Haverstock’s pupil numbers have fallen by a third, threatening the school’s viability. Haverstock has admitted that it needs alternative income sources, which Abacus offered, to survive.
But Haverstock’s governors voted against the plan.
Despite Abacus being Camden’s best primary school, the council oppose it for ideological reasons. Camden Conservatives will continue to work on practical solutions.
