Camden forced to u-turn on King Henry’s Road roadblocks
Camden has been forced by local residents and our opposition to u-turn on its plans to put bollards up to block King Henry’s Road and Elsworthy Road and force traffic on to Adelaide Road.
Camden wanted to push through its plans last year without asking resident's opinions. Cllr Steve Adams (Con, Belsize) and Cllr Oliver Cooper, Camden’s Leader of the Opposition, surveyed local residents and found huge opposition. This and a legal claim, which we backed, forced Camden to consult you properly.
Camden found that over three-quarters of residents opposed its scheme, as did St Paul’s School, UCL Academy, and Swiss Cottage Special School, so Camden dropped it.
Camden will now install width restrictions on King Henry’s Road and Elsworthy Road instead. This will stop HGVs using these roads, but otherwise not redirect traffic.
This will displace far less traffic onto Adelaide Road and cause less disruption to residents, who would have been forced to drive around the Swiss Cottage gyratory just to get home.
We said we would do what you want. Most residents told us they did not want Camden to block the roads, so we did everything we could to make sure you were heard.
Camden is also still widening the pavement on Primrose Hill Road and restricting traffic on the eastern quarter of Elsworthy Road during school run hours. The changes will be made from October or November. They are legally permitted to be in place for 18 months before they’re reviewed. Let us know your views on the impact. T
