Our area has a chance to elect a new councillor on 22nd July, after councillor Flick Rea stepped down from Camden Council after 35 years. We will miss her and wish her well in well-earned retirement.
Despite Flick’s efforts, Fortune Green — covering parts of West Hampstead, Kilburn and Cricklewood — has been ignored by Camden for years. With rubbish piling up, roadworks creating gridlock, and high-rise mega-developments proposed all around, the area needs change. And it needs it soon.
With the borough’s eyes on our area, now is an opportunity to elect a community champion who will solve local problems and send a message that our area can’t be ignored any longer.
Ian Cohen: 50 years a Fortune Green resident, local businessman, and community activist
I’ve lived in Fortune Green’s BAM Estate with my family for 50 years and a run a local drycleaners. I fell just 74 votes short of being elected to represent you in 2014. I’m now standing for Camden’s opposition, the Conservatives, to give Fortune Green the loudest voice on the council.
I have decades of experience working in our community:
■A governor at Emmanuel School since 2015
■Involvement in Fortune Green’s apolitical Neighbourhood Forum from its inception 9 years ago to preserve our community and oppose overdevelopment
■Volunteering with local food banks at JW3 and West Hampstead Food Hub to help through Covid
The change that’s desperately needed on Camden Council
I’m standing to stop Camden overlooking our community and solve the crises facing us:
■End the rubbish crisis by restoring weekly bin collections and taking tough action on flytipping
■Solve the roadwork chaos by making utility companies coordinate works and finish them quickly
■Tackle rising crime with plans to combat moped-based thefts, burglaries, and theft from cars
■Improve Mill Lane and Fortune Green Road so they’re better places to meet and shop
Overleaf are some of the difference that Conservative councillors have made elsewhere in Camden and what I will do to ensure Fortune Green benefits similarly. I’ve lived in Fortune Green all of my life and love it - if you elect me on 22nd July, I will work tirelessly to defend and improve it.
