Council reviews residents parking zones
Camden Council is consulting on the size of the present residents parking zones, on their hours, and on the hours of pay & display parking. If you have views on how our local zones CA-J, CA-B, CA-R and CA-K will operate in future, please respond. There is a simple online questionnaire, see https://consultations.wearecamden.org/culture-environment/test-fl/consult_view for details. Or contact [email protected] or 020 7974 4639 to get a paper version. The consultation runs until 18th June.
This is an “open” consultation – ie. there are no specific proposals to respond to; the council is gauging views. Any specific proposed changes to any zone would then be subject to further consultation. It’s unclear how likely significant changes to residents parking may be from this process. It may be that there is more scope for changing hours of control than for radical change in the size and shape of zones. The very high ratio of cars to parking places in Swiss Cottage/South Hampstead is, of course, a challenge in making any big change work and ensuring that there are not unforeseen negative side effects. As your ward councillors, we want to make sure any changes are clearly an improvement and command majority resident support. Please feel free to contact us with any questions, or if you would rather pass us your comments to pass on to the Council.
New police sergeant – Safer Neighbourhoods Public Meeting on Tuesday 22nd May
Swiss Cottage ward has a new police sergeant – Jason Collins. He replaces Nick Parry, who has moved on to a custody sergeant role after years of dedicated service in our patch. Sgt Collins has the same contact details as Nick Parry had.
Sgt Collins will be at the next Safer Neighbourhoods public meeting this coming Tuesday, 22nd May at 7pm at the Crossfield Centre, 8 Fairhazel Gardens. Cllr Roger Freeman has already been liaising with him. We are also working hard to ensure the Council and police work together to tackle the burglaries on the Broadfield estate and at the top end of Fitzjohns, among other hotspots. For details of our local police team and policing priorities see:

Fairfax Road pedestrian crossing – register your support!
Crossing the road at the top of Fairfax Rd (by the Chinese ceramics shop) is extremely dangerous for pedestrians, not least with the buses turning. We’ve pressed for this for years, and we’re going to push TfL again via a public petition, which we will submit after the summer. This location is TfL’s responsibility, not Camden’s, given that Finchley Rd is a “TfL road”. We know it’s on TfL’s “long list” of possible road schemes, but they haven’t made it a priority. If you want to sign the petition, email us marked “Fairfax Road pedestrian crossing”, indicate your support, and we’ll print it out and add to the petition. We also intend collecting signatures on Finchley Rd over the summer.
Olympics update – impact on our area
Camden officers, along with TfL, have been doing a good deal work of work on the disruption to traffic that Camden residents will have during the Olympics.
Reasonably enough they have concentrated on the south of the Borough, and we’ve resisted bombarding residents with general information on the Olympics they can find elsewhere.
Nevertheless there will be strains in our area. TfL recognize that Finchley Road Station will be affected when there are football matches at Wembley; the main issue for us will be the West Hampstead complex, especially with those trying to get on the North London Line to Stratford. We are repeating our request to Camden officers for them to get TfL to focus in on this area. It is good that the idea was dropped to have Finchley Road through Swiss Cottage as part of the Olympic Route Network, though the A41 south of Lords will be.

40-49 St Edmunds Terrace - update on redevelopment
In 2011, planning approval was granted for the redevelopment of the 40/49 St Edmund's Terrace ,Barrow Hill site with a new housing complex. This included a provision for social housing. Subsequently the developers presented a new application in January this year for the site; the essential difference between that application and the approved scheme was that it did not include a provision for social Housing. Camden officers have rejected this proposal; one of the reasons being that it is appropriate to have social housing on this site. This developer has appealed this rejection by Camden; it is currently anticipated there will be a Public Inquiry in September. While of course the developer can still proceed with the proposal approved last year, one suspects that there will be no work done on this site until such time as a ruling is made on the Appeal, which will probably happen in the fourth quarter.
We have also objected to the application for an extension by St Christina’s school in St Edmund’s Terrace, and are very conscious of the development pressures around this road. This is a Westminster Council application. The reservoir application still seems likely to come forward shortly.
Diamond Jubilee weekend licensing
On Friday 1st June and Saturday 2nd June, licensed premises will be able, under national licensing legislation, to stay open until 1am instead of 11pm, marking this as an exceptional event. There are also of course a fair number of street parties and other events taking place across Camden, with simplified rules for closing off streets etc. See below for licensing details:
