Three pubs in Hampstead Town have been given status as Assets of Community Value: making it harder to convert them into anything other than a pub, and thus helping to preserve them.
The pubs - the Holly Bush on Holly Mount, the Duke of Hamilton on New End, and the William IV on Hampstead High Street - join a select list of just 20 structures of all sorts across Camden, including two further pubs - the (closed) Old White Bear on Well Road and the Magdala on South Hill Park - in Hampstead.
Camden Conservatives proposed a motion in June calling for all pubs in Camden to be protected with the status. Sadly, Labour amended the motion to remove this demand, but the campaign, led by the Hampstead Forum, aims to list every pub in Hampstead as an ACV anyway - and the Conservatives stand fully behind them.
Cllr Oliver Cooper, who represents Hampstead Town, said, "This is brilliant news for those of us - like me! - that enjoy our many fine local pubs. Hampstead is famous for its historic and beautiful pubs, and the Conservatives want to keep it that way.
"I want to thank the Hampstead Forum and my colleague Tom Currie, for leading such a great campaign. I've already celebrated this news in the Holly Bush - I look forward to toasting to the future success of the Duke of Hamilton and William IV in the coming days."
