Local Conservatives today rallied to oppose Labour’s threats to close West Hampstead Library in the latest bout of callous cuts by Labour-run Camden Council.
Labour’s Cabinet Member for Culture – Councillor Abdul Hai – has called for £800,000 cuts in library services, and has named West Hampstead as a library shortlisted for closure.
This comes despite Labour protecting wasteful expenditure in the 2nd March budget, including not letting out unused Council-owned offices worth £1,200,000 a year and continuing to publish an expensive monthly propaganda magazine.
Our local library, on Dennington Park Road, is a vital local hub and a well-used resources in the heart of our community.
The cuts come after three libraries lost their funding from Camden Council in 2012, when Tulip Siddiq was Cabinet Member for Culture. They’ve continued to run as community-run and community-funded libraries.
There is a public consultation, which you can find online at http://camden.gov.uk/futurelibraries. Please take part in the consultation, express your opposition, and join us in fighting to save our local library from Labour’s cuts.
