Hampstead Town Planning Application Updates
6 Streatley Place
You may have read in the local press – and even in The Times – that Living Architecture, the property development company owned by author Alain de Botton, has applied for planning permission at 6 Streatley Place (the narrow pedestrian passageway that runs between New End and Back Lane).
The company intends to turn existing green space into a hideous three-storey holiday let building, with huge glass frontages that will overlook existing homes and gardens. The design is at total odds with the existing Victorian architecture within the Conservation Area, and will involve the loss of eight mature trees on the site.
Local residents will be caused huge disruption - not just during the building works themselves, but also after construction is completed, due to the constant turnover of occupants at the holiday let.
If you wish to object to this dreadful proposed scheme, please write to Rob Tulloch (the Camden planning officer assessing the application), at [email protected].
29 New End
You may recall that in November 2013, Camden’s planning committee voted unanimously to reject the demolition of the old nursing home at 29 New End, and the construction of seventeen luxury apartments with a triple-storey basement car park in its place.
The property developers – Karawana Holdings Limited, an offshore development company based in the Virgin Islands – subsequently appealed the decision with the planning inspectorate.
I am extremely sorry to report that the appeal was allowed, and the Council’s decision has been overturned. Planning permission has now been granted for the construction works to begin.
Thank you to all the residents and local groups who campaigned so tirelessly to oppose this awful development. Please be assured that I will be keeping an extremely close eye on the construction process, to ensure that disruption to residents is minimised.
