As most local residents will know, the Magdala was recently sold to an off-shore private owner, and is currently in the process of refurbishment.
Although the new owners have given assurances that they fully intend to continue operating the Magdala as a pub, there has naturally been concern about the future of a much-loved focal point of the community.
Thanks to the tenacity and efforts of local residents groups, the Magdala has now been listed as an Asset Of Community Value. This means that if the owner wishes to sell the Magdala, they have to allow a six month moratorium on the sale, to permit local residents to raise the cash to bid if they wish to do so.
Cllr Tom Currie said, “It’s fantastic news that the Council has listened to the concerns of local residents, and afforded the Magdala a listing as an Asset Of Community Value. I’m currently working with Council officers to find additional available options, in order to strengthen the protection on such a beautiful and historic pub.”
