TfL has submitted its planning application for the redevelopment of West Hampstead Overground station. Under the plans, a new frontage will be built south of the existing station, set back from the road.
A new walkway will run down to the platforms (which will be connected by a bridge). The existing station building will be turned into a retail unit.
We welcome the proposal to upgrade the station, which is too congested and inaccessible. However, we are aware that a number of residents are unhappy with the current plans. In particular:
1. The design is out of keeping with the area. In particular, the proposed ‘petrol station-style’ roof is too high and badly designed.
2. The accessibility issues have not been resolved. There is no drop-off space and the new walkways may not be wide enough.
3. There is no need for another retail unit, especially since the station is being funded through a grant and money under s106. This area should be given over to the public: for seating or for a cycle rack.
