Patrick McLoughlin receives Petition to Save Camden from HS2
The Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, received a petition to Save Camden from HS2 from Camden Conservatives in his office at the House of Commons on Wednesday. The petition, which was set up by Camden Conservatives in January, has now achieved 43, 759 signatures and numbers are still rising! All around Britain, people of all ages and all political affiliations have come together to stand up for Camden.
Claire-Louise Leyland, councillor for Belsize ward and Leader of the Camden Conservatives said, “The sheer numbers of people who have signed our petition speaks volumes. Camden is much loved and far too precious – and far too valuable to the UK’s economy – to be sacrificed. We hope that the Government will listen to so many thousands of voices all asking for the link between HS1 and HS2 to be dropped and for a different, better solution to be found for Euston station.”
Camden Town and Euston will suffer considerable damage if HS2’s current proposals go ahead as planned and the negative effects, such as traffic gridlock, air pollution, reduced property prices and downturn in trade, will be felt all over the borough.
The new Chairman of HS2, Sir David Higgins, is currently considering how the government’s plans for HS2 may be improved. His report is due on 17 March.
