Simon Marcus For Hampstead and Kilburn “Our party needs candidates like Simon who have proved their politics is rooted in real life and their ambitions grounded in improving where they live, work and play.” Boris Johnson, Mayor of London
A strong local voice My family has lived in this area for three generations. I was born and bred here, have lived here most of my life and now represent Hampstead Town as a Councillor. Every corner of this constituency has been part of my life: Whether growing up around the village, playing cricket for Brondesbury, captaining Hampstead Heathens Rugby Team, going to school at St Anthony’s, boxing or coaching at St Pancras ABC, running on the Heath or nights out in West Hampstead and Kilburn, this place runs through my veins.
My strong local network helps me respond to local problems and challenges such as my campaign to keep a police station in Hampstead and West Hampstead and helping local free school groups.
Business and Life Experience I am not a career politician, having invested in and managed small businesses for 15 years in the property, publishing and leisure sectors. I also worked for the British Chamber of Commerce in Brussels for 4 years, advising small and large businesses. I am now an Education Consultant working for Mayor Boris Johnson’s Free Schools programme.
Values and Social Action I believe our society is crying out for values and for action. In 2006, I founded the Boxing Academy, a pioneering alternative education charity in Tottenham for excluded teenagers. Over 90% of our students return to education, training or employment. In 2010, I expanded the Academy to our second site in Hackney. In the 2010 General Election, I was the parliamentary candidate in Barking where the British National Party and their leader Nick Griffin were trying to make a breakthrough. Against all the odds and with a united grassroots campaign I beat them into 3rd place. After the August riots of 2011, the Prime Minister appointed me to the Independent Riots Communities and Victims Panel to help find solutions to make sure similar unrest does not happen again.
