Simon Marcus for Hampstead Town & South End Green
I grew up in Hampstead and have lived here most of my adult life. I have fond memories of walking to school along Church Row, paddling in Whitestone Pond, buying my first books at the High Hill Bookshop and drinking my first pint at the Holly Bush.
For three generations my family has been at the heart of our community and even as
a boy I helped out at ‘Heath & Hampstead Society’ fundraisers. I go running on the
Heath every week, I have spent 20 years playing cricket at Brondesbury, I captain the Hampstead Heathens Rugby Team, I used to work at the Armoury in Pond Street and I still train there.
Hampstead has never needed defending more than now, and I am committed to protecting and enhancing all the things that make this such a special place to live.
Whether keeping a full time police station, campaigning for a vibrant high street with local, independent shops or stopping developments that spoil our area, I will fight for what is best for Hampstead.
I was heavily involved in this summer’s local shops campaign, battling, together with Jessica Learmond-Criqui, on behalf of our independent traders on Hampstead High Street.
I have a proven history on the front line, taking action to improve communities. In 2006, I founded and ran the Boxing Academy, a ground-breaking alternative education project in North London for excluded teenagers. I am proud to say that the Academy has a success rate of over 90% in returning its students to education, training or employment. The Academy expanded to a second site in 2010 with the support of London Mayor Boris Johnson.
In 2010 I was the Parliamentary Candidate for Barking and I took on Nick Griffin and the British National Party in their East End heartland. Against the odds I beat them, pushing them into third place.
Following last summer’s riots, I was appointed by the Government to sit on the Independent Riots Communities and Victims Panel. Travelling the country I saw the pressures that local communities face in difficult times. I also saw how local councils promote duty and pride in their communities, run good services and how they keep their residents safe. Through my work with the Riots Panel and the Boxing Academy, I understand how communities stay strong and councils make less money go further.
Prior to founding the Boxing Academy, I was a small business investor and advisor and worked at the British Chamber of Commerce in Brussels. Today, I still advise the Boxing Academy and act as a consultant to education projects, think tanks, businesses, charities and government. I also write, and recently published a
feature article in The Spectator.
I have always believed in being judged by my deeds. Whether founding a charity, helping small businesses or running a local campaign I have the proven experience, energy, skills and integrity to help change people’s lives for the better. I am now privileged to have the opportunity to serve the area I grew up in and give
something back to our community.
Whether you own a business, are a local resident worried about the closure of the police station or you just want a common sense approach to local issues from someone who knows and loves Hampstead, I feel I have the qualifications and skills to represent you at Camden Town Hall, and it would be an honour to do so.
