Labour threat to Highgate with 20% school fees hike
Don has begun campaigning to highlight the threat that a Labour plan to put up school fees for Independent schools by 20% will have on Highgate.
■ Labour propose to add 20% VAT on independent schools' fees, the Parents Tax, is once again on the forefront of their manifesto. It would have a devastating impact on schools in Highgate, both independent and state. Labour have changed their minds on almost everything – but not this.
■ We are aware that Highgate School and Channing School are essential economic drivers at the heart of Highgate's economy. Don Williams is very concerned that a 20% VAT hike on independent schools' fees may have a detrimental effect on our community.
■ The negative effects on local state schools need to be considered. Due to Labour’s tax, many
families would no longer be able afford to send their children to private schools. Many aspirational parents sacrifice in order to give their children the very best start in life.
■ A 20% VAT hike means a substantial number of children would be forced to enter Haringey state education. This may result in chaos, with many children being sent to Tottenham and Wood Green for their schooling - and a big bill for cash-strapped Haringey.
■ The choice will be clear at the General Election. Don Williams is firmly against this proposal. You can tell him your views via the survey by typing haringey.team/VATOnfees
