Out of control basement excavations have significantly affected our community in recent years, and the Conservative Government is acting to make sure basement developments are managed properly.
The Government has launched a consultation, giving you the chance to comment on the impact of inappropriate developments and help change national policy. You can respond by visiting http://bit.ly/BasementConsult2016
Basement developments have significantly increased in Camden over the last ten years. One of many famous cases was the high profile case featured the CNJ (pics above) and fully covered in the CNJ about Air Studios here issues with its neighbours). They cause construction impacts (from noise, dust, and traffic), increased flood risk, harm to property, and visual impacts.
Despite all this, in 2014/15, Labour-run Camden Council refused just 14% of basement applications: one in seven.
Local residents are forced to stand by and watch this damage being caused, while at the same time, often paying enormous bills for legal and other professional advice.
Once approved, the Council often does not make sure that developers stick to the conditions and plans that were agreed. This multiplies the impact that they have on the community, while discriminating against responsible developers.
Camden Conservatives want this to stop, and want the planning process to reflect residents’ concerns.
If you’ve struggled with problems arising from having a basement in your street, or have any ideas about how the system can be improved, please take a few minutes to respond to the consultation using the link below. The deadline for responses is 16th December 2016.
