Finchley Road 20mph speed limit: is it lawful?
The imposition of a blanket 20mph speed limit on Finchley Road has caused more gridlock on Finchley Road and caused rat-running through South Hampstead.
Don Williams (pictured) and Camden Conservatives are pushing for this change to be reversed until it is fully scrutinised and unless it is supported by local residents, rather than forced through without your views.
Camden Conservatives tabled a motion on the subject in January, opposing TfL's unilateral change, but this was opposed - and the 20mph scheme was backed - by Labour, Lib Dems, and Greens. You can read that motion here.
The current law for setting speed limits was introduced a decade ago. It says, "A comprehensive and early consultation of all those who may be affected by the introduction of a 20 mph scheme is an essential part of the implementation process. This needs to include local residents."
However, local residents were not consulted at all on this change. Your local knowledge about the impact that the changes would have - based on your experience of the rat-running when TfL narrowed Finchley Road by one lane for a year during Covid - has been missed out on by TfL and Camden.
Don Williams is corresponding with Transport for London and consulting with members of the London Assembly to consider our options, as ignoring residents on such an important scheme simply isn't an option.
