West Hampstead councillor Angela Pober has resigned from the Labour Party and revealed that Labour’s West Hampstead Library campaign was a sham.
In an explosive resignation statement, Angela revealed that the threat to West Hampstead Library was bogus and Labour were “manipulating the residents for political gain”. It was concoted by Labour so “the Labour councillors would be given credit for ‘winning’ and it would make us ‘look good’.”
As Conservatives, we’ve been fighting hard to save our library from Labour’s threats to close it. Like many local residents, we feared losing this invaluable resource.
Labour have a track record of cutting libraries. Tulip Siddiq ended funding to three libraries in north-west Camden in 2012, while she was Camden’s Cabinet member in charge of libraries.
Local Conservatives opposed those cuts and have promised an extra £250,000 a year to fund community libraries, Sadly, this was voted down by Labour and the Lib Dems in March.
Instead of working hard to protect libraries, Labour were willfully scaring residents to make a quick buck politically.
While Labour were running a sham campaign, Conservatives have been campaigning on issues that affect residents.
We’ve been fighting against Labour’s Liddell Road skyscraper and against Labour’s plans to reduce bin collections. And we’ve been backing more school places, local jobs at the Travis Perkins site, and the great new Neighbourhood Plan.
It’s time West Hampstead and Fortune Green had councillors that fought campaigns for residents, not for political gain.
