Camden is facing legal action after deciding to proceed with removing all parking for the entire mile of Haverstock Hill and replacing it with 2 cycle lanes. This has been done with no consultation and despite widespread opposition.
Camden plans do to preliminary works this month and full works in January. As your councillors, we wrote to you in September about these plans. Camden ordered us to keep them secret - we refused to, and if we hadn’t written to you, they’d have remained secret for at least another two months!
We held a survey, and 1,300 local residents responded: with 81% against the idea. We take listening to you seriously, so because of this strength of opinion, we’ve strongly opposed it too.
95% of businesses on Haverstock Hill signed a petition in opposition, saying it would be the ‘final nail in their coffin’. But Camden didn’t care.
We’ve launched a new survey to ask your views on Camden’s actions, on what can be done to help cyclists in a way that won’t hurt other road users, and how you can help. You can fill it in at www.camden.team/HaverstockHill
Despite the law requiring residents and businesses be consulted, Camden is trying to force it through anyway. We know that some residents and businesses are looking to challenge this decision. If you would like to support this challenge, fill out the survey saying so and we will pass on your details.
Camden Council doesn’t want to ask your views. But Belsize and Hampstead’s Conservative councillors do, and we will not stop standing up for you and finding solutions that have public support.
